TELL ME, FRIENDS:

What have you listened to lately that you're currently digging?

Buddy gave me a couple of Neko Case CD's the other day and I tell you: that is some groovy stuff. Am looking forward to seeing her live in a couple of weeks.

My Morning Jacket's new CD, Z, is suprisingly good. Not that their other stuff was bad, more sort of "eh", but this new CD is like (headshake) - whaaaa? I'm also going to be seeing them at the Henry Fonda in a week or so.

So tell me - where else is the proverbial "it" at?

Let's Go Go Go White Sox

by Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers (1959)

White Sox! White Sox!
Go-Go White Sox!
Let's Go-Go-Go White Sox
We're with you all the way!
You're always in there fighting,
And you do your best.
We're glad to have you
Out here in the Middle West.
We're gonna root-root-root-root White Sox,
And cheer you on to victory.
When we're in the stands,
We'll make those rafters ring;
All through the season,
You will hear us sing.
Let's Go-Go-Go White Sox,
Chicago's proud of you!
White Sox! White Sox!
Go-Go White Sox!
Root-Root-Root for the White Sox,
We'll cheer you on to victory.
When we're in the stands,
We'll make those rafters ring;
All through the season,
You will hear us sing.
Let's Go-Go-Go White Sox,
Chicago's proud of you!
Play it now!
White Sox! White Sox!
Go-Go White Sox!
Let's Go-Go-Go White Sox!
Chicago is proud of you!

That wasn't necessary. Stop it.

Agreed on the Z--I'd never listened to them before, but I've been digging on that disc. I was lumping them in with other My bands I've never heard: My Chemical Romance, My Bloody Valentine. Okay, just the two then.

"It" can also be found in the new John Vanderslice disc, Pixel Revolt. Rogue Wave's got a new disc that's quite nice.

Are we just limited to music here? Because "it" can also be found in a little pub/restaurant on the edge of Iowa City's downtown called the Sanctuary in the shape of an andouille sausage po'boy. Oh, yes, "it" is there, too.

Also, old people have "it."

Old people smell like moth balls.

Perhaps this constitutes their mysterious "it"?

You already know I'm all about the Z. Album of the year...Freshest of all the fresh breath that has been breathed upon me all year...Fresh like Binaca, fresher than a moist towlette.

Also, the french keyboard whiz "General Elektriks" and his album 'Cliquety Kliqk' is still spurting happy juice all up in my brain. "Frost On Your Sunglasses" is my song o' the season. And, The Earlies debut album just got released stateside. GREAT album to tide you over until Flaming Lips put out their newest one...Besides that, I'm listening to a lotta Merle Haggard and the newest Blackalicious album which is damn good, too, if you're digging the whole hippety hoppety type thing.

The smell of mothballs drives me up the wall...it's like that more-than-slightly-overweight-and-drunk girl at the bar/wedding/friend's house who clings to you and is tough to get rid of without becoming rude or disrespectful.

Do audiobooks count? If so, put Tony Hendra's reading of his memoir "Father Joe" on your list. He has a knack for how to make audiobooks work, if that makes sense. And the book is absolutely hysterical and just plain wonderful.

(Hendra, for the uninitiated, is the British comedian who plays "Ian Faith" in This Is Spinal Tap.)

I apologize for posting the entire lyrics to "Let's Go Go Go White Sox". That was unnecessary. I don't think any of these songs will qualify as "it", but just for fun I thought I'd post the playlist for mix tape I just made for my girlfriend.

1. American Girls - Weezer
2. The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice
3. Her Tea Leaves - Iron and Wine
4. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service
5. Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
6. MMM'Bop - Hanson
7. Los Angeles I'm Yours - The Decemberists
8. Let's Go Go Go White Sox! - Capitan Stubby and the Buccanears
9. Izzo (H.O.V.A.) - Jay-Z
10. Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
11. Final Countdown - Europe
12. Fall of Troy - Tom Waits
13. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
14. District Sleeps Alone Tonight - The Postal Service
15. Artificial Light - Rainer Maria
16. Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire

Feel free to use my blog as a platform to tell us how awesome you are, and how much you love your girlfriend, or whatever you're trying to accomplish here.

Also, Rainer Maria sucks.

Why do I have to type in crazy letters to post now?

So the spambots don't post comments.

AM seems testy. Maybe he is in musth.

Also, Fisher -- dude named Farmhand just burned your ass. Giving out kudos to a child molester? That doesn't jibe with me. I'm a man of principle, and if I'm going to ask a six year old girl to give me oral sex, it sure as hell isn't going to be my own daughter.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm willing to bet that most of America agrees with me.

In defense of the spambots, at least they don't go around recommending new music. Not that you didn't ask for it...

Wow. Didn't know about the other Hendra book and this whole other issue. The book is a bit thin in discussing his first family.

Fact, fiction, or a blurring of both, the book's a pip. Although, this whole issue does give one a lot to think about it.

As far as your sarcasm, Mastodon: eat me.
